LORMAN, Miss. –  The Alcorn State University baseball program welcomed its 50th member of the 100-hit club in
Kyle Jenkins in the seventh inning but dropped the series opener to Alabama A&M, 12-5.
The Braves (6-13, 6-11 SWAC) had four errors in the first three innings which led to five unearned Bulldog runs, a hole in which the team could not recover from.
Kyle Jenkins wrote his name into the record book immediately following the seventh inning stretch, crushing his third career triple to the fence in right-center to score two and make it a four-run affair at the time.
Kobe Head received the tough luck loss, tossing four innings while allowing just one earned run (five unearned) with four strikeouts and two walks.
Tyler Smith had a productive evening, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored with one of his hits resulting in a double.
Devin Puckett pitched well out of the pen, hurling two scoreless frames plus three punchouts and only one hit surrendered.
Jarius Colley and
Edward Jackson both picked up two hits plus a double with Colley scoring twice and Jackson driving one in.
Alabama A&M (6-13, 6-11 SWAC) had five of its 11 hits account for extra bases, led by Janmikell Bastardo who had a triple and a round-tripper with three runs batted in.
Dillon Roop also knocked in three for the Maroon and White plus a double while Carlos Mas was the other Bulldog to accumulate multiple RBIs at two.
AAMU starter Jose Figueroa got into trouble early but was able to escape it to give up four runs over six innings to go along with 11 Ks.
Josue Torres earned the rare three-inning save, coughing up just one run and two hits as well as striking out three Braves to finish the ballgame.
The Braves and Bulldogs have split their four matchups in 2021 but Alcorn still is in command of the all-time series at 100-44.
The Purple and Gold will be right back at it Friday as they finish the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon with the second tilt being of a shortened seven-inning variety.
