GULFPORT, Miss. –  The Alcorn State University softball program had numerous chances with either bases loaded or runners in scoring position but was unable to cash in as Texas Southern barely escaped with the win, 3-2.
The Lady Braves (10-17, 8-7 SWAC) got a rock solid outing from
Ambria Dorsey despite wearing the loss, consistently tight roping out of potential danger and going the distance. The All-SWAC Second Teamer tossed six innings while surrendering just two earned runs and five hits while whiffing one.
While the Purple and Gold had its difficulties putting the ball in play, they showed off their "eagle eyes" as they accounted for six walks on the evening including scoring on a wild pitch.
The most noteworthy of those free passes came courtesy of SWAC Player of the Year
Amari Ramsey, who coaxed a five-pitch bases loaded walk out of TSU starter Naomi Reyes to put Alcorn on the board in the fifth.
Chloey Morgan had the only multi-hit outing of the night, smacking two singles, while
Marsha Hunt had the lone extra-base knock with a two-out double down the left field line to keep the Lady Braves alive in the final frame.
Texas Southern (17-18, 13-5 SWAC) rode the arm of SWAC Pitcher of the Year Naomi Reyes to the victory as it took her 119 pitches to pile up 11 punchouts to go along with just one earned run and four hits given up.
The Maroon and White had both of its RBIs come off one momentous swing from Tevantae Tate, a two-RBI laser beam triple into the gap which widened the lead from one to three in the third.
Other Lady Tigers who contributed extra-base hits were Daryn Haslam (triple) and Pamela Richardson (double), with Richardson subsequently scoring the game's first run.
Alcorn has dropped its last five ballgames opposite Texas Southern, going 9-22 all-time against the ladies from Houston.
It's win-or-go-home for Coach Rankin and the Lady Braves as they turn right back around to play the West's #3 seed, the Grambling State Lady Tigers, to see who survives and advances tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
