Baseball’s Season Comes To A Close In SWAC Tournament

MADISON, Ala. –  The Alcorn State University baseball program connected for ten hits and five runs while playing quality defense but saw its campaign end in a 10-5 loss to Southern on Friday.

The Braves (7-20, 6-16 SWAC) got multi-hit outings from four players and one RBI each off the bat of five student-athletes but were unable to notch a single extra-base hit.

Tristin Garcia concludes his stellar 2021 with the second-best batting average in the NCAA (.445), going 2-of-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a steal.

Kyle Jenkins wrapped up his tenure on "The Reservation" as the sixth-most prolific home run hitter in program history with 16 bombs while also joining the 100-hit club to finish at 103 (46th all-time). Jenkins collected his 25th career game with two or more base knocks to go along with a run batted in and a walk.

Tyler Smith had the most efficient day on offense, reaching three times by way of two singles and a walk plus scoring twice with a stolen base.

Hunter Wilson registered two singles and made his last at-bat in Purple and Gold count, driving in Garcia for a ribbie.

Joe Smith was the top hurler on the bump for Coach Richardson, producing a fiery performance of three innings while surrendering just two hits, one run and one walk while fanning three Jaguars.

Southern (17-28, 13-11 SWAC) led from wire-to-wire, breaking the game open in the final two frames on a two-run blast in the seventh and another two insurance runs in the eighth.

The majority of the production came from the third through sixth hitters in the lineup, combining for nine hits, nine runs scored, six RBIs, three walks, one of the two doubles and the round-tripper.

Jacob Snyder earned the victory in relief, capping the ballgame by throwing six innings of three-run ball, averaging a strikeout per frame (6).

Southern continues to hold a major advantage in the all-time series history with Alcorn as the Jaguars have won 70 meetings compared to 28 for the Braves including one tie in 1979.
