CLINTON, Miss. – Beginning this year's countdown of Alcorn's ten most memorable wins of the 2020-21 athletic calendar is the women's tennis program erased a three-point deficit to complete the ultimate comeback at Mississippi College.
The Lady Braves earned a non-conference victory and first triumph of the campaign in dramatic fashion, rattling off four unanswered with two singles pairings resulting in tiebreakers while another went the distance.
MC was in cruise control early on as it won all three of its doubles matchups while allowing the Purple and Gold to take just five games. They further added to their seemingly comfortable cushion as the second and top flights for the Choctaws put the home team in front at 3-0.
That's when the ladies from Lorman turned up the intensity with their backs against the wall. The rally began with #4
Aizat Zholdakyeva who dropped the first set via tiebreaker (7
7-6
3) before storming back with a pair of 6-2 winners over Fernanda Cota.
Next to finish was #6
Stefany Grlj as she wasted no time taking care of Julia McCarty, coasting to a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
The equalizer turned out to be
Kimberley Kaome who sandwiched a 6-1 defeat between wins of 6-3 and 6-1 out of the fifth slot over Kennedy Rodriguez.
Finally, capping off the thrilling matchup in Clinton was
Mikaela Konstantinova in the third flight. It was a back-and-forth intense struggle between her and Mississippi College's Anna Didkovska as the first two sets both went to extras with Konstantinova prevailing in the first (7
7-6
3) while Didkovska won by the same score in the second (7
7-6
3). In the winner-take-all third and final set of the afternoon, the sophomore from Bulgaria came through in the clutch, narrowly holding off her adversary by a final of 6-4 to put the exclamation point on the victory celebration.
