Alcorn State Men's Basketball Trounce Jackson State U; Get First Win Over Rival Since 2018
The ASU Braves beat the JSU Tigers for the first time since 2018, 65-50.
JACKSON, MISS. -- The four-year losing streak to rival Jackson State has met its end. In the first SWAC game of the 2022 season, the ASU Braves basketball squad realized their first win over their SWAC rival since 2018.
Anchored by Lenell Henry posting 22 points, 4 rebounds, three blocks, and one steal in 31 minutes, the Braves dominant two-way performance brought a signature win to their résumé. Dominic "DJ" Brewton put up 14 points for the Braves.
The energy levels were high from start to finish, catalyzed by Head Coach Landon Bussie's incredible displays of motivation and enthusiasm. The win was kick-started by a tight game in the first half. Once the momentum was gained, it never ended.
Showing physicality and an effort to grab loose balls, the Braves logged 24-rebounds with a six rebound differential on the boards against a team with a host of giants, displaying what it meant to come away victorious.
On Wednesday, Forward Keondre Montgomery was confident in his squad's ability to compete with the heavyweight rival. Despite never performing in a conference game, the new additions, especially on defense, produced at a high level to elevate the Braves to uncharted heights.
"We pride ourselves on the defensive end, we really work on this during our practice hours and it showed during this game. Height is just what it is, Confidence, Team Chemistry, and Leadership get you these wins" Coach Bussie Added.
The selflessness, passion, and rare chemistry paid dividends in a strong victory for a young team that has yet to gel.
The Braves are away for action against Alabama A&M in their second conference game of the season this Saturday at 3 p.m.
