Alcorn Tripped Up by Texas Southern

Braves fall in three sets at home to Tigers

LORMAN, Miss. – Alaina Armstrong tallied seven kills, while three additional Braves collected six kills each, as Alcorn fell to visiting Texas Southern, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) volleyball action at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Texas Southern took the match on scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-20.

Texas Southern (2-16, 2-5 SWAC) ran out to a 13-3 lead in the opening set en route to the 25-19 win.

Despite hitting just .097 as a team in the opener, the Tigers recorded a match-high eight service aces in the set. Four of those came by way of Danielle Lilley, while Chenise Cook added another two for the visitors.

The two teams were almost even in the second set, as Alcorn (2-18, 1-6 SWAC) hit .207 as a unit with 11 kills on 29 swings. TXSU countered with a .206 hitting mark, accumulating 13 kills on 34 swings.

Freshman setter Ramona Pulu handed out seven assists in the second frame, while it was Jeda Curry supplying the kills for the Purple and Gold – five of them to be exact. However, timely kills by Lilley down the stretch were enough to see the Tigers post the win by winning five of the set's final nine points.

In the third and final set, TXSU's Janita Chapman supplied her team with six kills and two digs, as the Tigers hit .346 overall in the frame.

With Alcorn trailing, 17-11, Alaina Armstrong posted two kills, and Makayla Wardlaw served up a pair of aces to bring the Braves back to within 17-15.

But four attack errors down the stretch were enough to allow the visitors a 25-20 set- and match win.

Texas Southern was paced on the day by a pair of Tigers in double-figures in the kills column – Chapman (13) and Lilley (10). Setter Dallas Balanay-Flores handed out 28 assists for the match, also leading the team with nine digs on defense.

Alcorn was led by Armstrong's seven kills and 10 digs. Curry, Demya Tate and Makayla Wardlaw each tallied six kills apiece for the Braves. Mikenzie Young-Mullins had 12 digs, while Pulu had 13 assists, followed by Alissa Williams with 12 assists.

Alcorn is back in action Monday, Oct. 17, when the Braves welcome Prairie View A&M to the Davey L. Whitney Complex at 6:30 p.m.
