Match Report | Alcorn Settles for Draw at Alabama State

Braves and Hornets enjoy stalemate in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Neither team could find its way onto the scoresheet Friday evening, as Alcorn and Alabama State settled for a goalless draw in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Soccer play at the ASU Soccer Complex.

Alabama State (4-7-4, 2-2-3 SWAC) had won the previous 12 meetings against the Braves entering Friday night's contest.

Alcorn (4-8-3, 2-3-2 SWAC) improved its unbeaten streak to four games on the spin – the longest for the Purple and Gold since 2011. In that 2011 run, the Braves collected three wins and a draw. Currently, Head Coach Kevin Larry's side are enjoying a string of two wins and two draws on the trot, respectfully.

In the opening 45 minutes, both goalkeepers were called into action early-on.

The Hornets' Isabella Beortegui forced a save from Alcorn's Paula Argelaguet in the 11th minute, while the Braves answered accordingly with a 12th-minute save employed by Alabama State's Sheila Sanchez in goal off a shot by the Braves Jaidyn Matheu.

D'Ana Prieto peppered a shot from distance at the Hornets goal with a 22nd-minute strike, but it was beaten away by Sanchez. Meanwhile, Argelaguet was called back into action with a save of a shot by the host's Kassandra Schoen towards the bottom-center of the net in the 28th minute.

Both keepers would make another save before the end of the opening half to preserve the tie.

In the second half, it would be Argelaguet proving to be the busier of the two number ones.

The Barcelona native saved shots from Claudia Gillum in the 50th minute, as well as the Hornets' Katherine Nedved just after the hour mark. She was called into action once again in the 87th minute with a crucial save to salvage the draw, as she pushed aside a shot by Brooklyn Broderick that appeared to be heading towards the bottom of the net.

Alcorn Sophomore Charlie Bal and Prieto provided the shots on-target for the Braves in the second 45 minutes of play – both of which were stopped by Sanchez.

Freshman forward Samara Nunn had a pair of shots on goal for the Purple and Gold in the contest, as well as two from Prieto (one in each half). Bal and Matheu provided the other shots that fell on target for the visitors.

Argelaguet went the distance in goal for the Braves, making six saves altogether on the night. Her counterpart from Alabama State, Sanchez, equally made six important saves in goal.

Alcorn will look to continue its unbeaten streak Sunday, when the Braves travel to Alabama A&M in Huntsville for another key SWAC showdown at 1 p.m.
