Volleyball Visits Southern for Midweek SWAC Play

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn Volleyball travels to Southern (La.) for a midweek Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest on Thursday, Oct. 6, at Seymour Gymnasium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
 
Alcorn enters the contest sitting at 2-13 overall but holding a 1-1 record in league play. The Braves defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 3-1 in their last outing in what will be 10 days ago when first serve occurs Thursday evening. Prior to that, the Braves fell at home to Grambling State, 3-0 in a tightly contested matchup between the two league foes.
 
Southern enters the matchup at 0-14 overall and using an 0-2 record in the SWAC on the year. The Jaguars fell to in-state rival Grambling State, 3-0 in their last contest on September 26.
 
Last season, Alcorn dropped both matches to Southern, with the Jaguars taking 3-1 and 3-0 decisions from the Braves, respectfully.
 
Alcorn is led by junior middle blocker Faith Archibong with 82 kills, while the offensive attack is setup by freshman setter Ramona Pulu, who sits fifth in the conference for assists with 248 under her belt. Pulu also has 14 kills and four service aces, while Archibong has added 19 blocks (15 assisted).
 
Freshman middle blocker Demya Tate leads the Braves in the blocks category with 34 total (25 assisted), while transfer Jodorrian Taylor has recorded 16 blocks (12 assisted) so far on the season.
 
Outside hitter turned libero Mikenzie Young-Mullins, a 2022 Preseason All-SWAC Second Team selection, has a team-leading 90 digs for the Purple and Gold, with freshman defensive specialist Meagan Alfaro just behind her with 81 digs. Not to be outdone, Pulu has amassed 76 digs of her own.
 
The Jaguars of Southern are topped by Xaria Taylor with 95 kills, while teammates Kailee Deffebaugh (69 kills) and Akilah Smith (66 kills) each supply offensive points for the team as well. The Jags utilize a two-setter system, as teammates Kyla Carrier (190 assists) and Jordan Felix (160 assists) lead the line in the assists department. Felix also tops the Jags with 11 service aces on the campaign.
