BATON ROUGE, La. –
Jeda Curry registered her first double-double of the season on Thursday evening, as visiting Alcorn fell to Southern (La.) by a score of 3-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) volleyball action taking place inside Seymour Gymnasium. The Braves dropped the match on scores of 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22.
After falling behind following the first two sets of the match, Alcorn (2-14, 1-2 SWAC) bounced back in the third set to claim the victory, 25-20.
A trio of attack errors charged to Southern (1-14, 1-2 SWAC) – added a kill from
Jeda Curry – allowed the Braves to jump out to a 10-5 lead early-on in the third frame. Following another Curry kill, as well as a
Mikenzie Young-Mullins service ace and blocks from
Demya Tate and
Faith Archibong, the Braves would step out to a sizeable 14-6 advantage.
Alcorn hit 29 percent as a team in the third frame, while limiting the Jaguars to just six kills and six errors on 30 swings as a unit.
However, double-digit kills as a team from the homestanding Jags in each of the second (14 kills / 4 errors) and fourth sets (17 kills / 4 errors), respectively, allowed them to grab their first win of the 2022 campaign.
Southern posted a match-high 41 percent attack average in the fourth set en route to the 25-22 win to close out the match.
Alcorn was led on the night by Curry's 12-kill, 11-dig performance, as the Hampton, Georgia senior produced her first double-double of the 2022 season for the Purple and Gold.
Makayla Wardlaw provided six kills for the Braves, while Young-Mullins gathered in 10 digs to go along with five kills and three service aces.
Southern was led by Jordan Felix, as she tallied a 10-kills, 10-digs double-double for her side. Xaria Taylor led the Jaguars with 13 kills in the offensive category, as teammate Marian Attaway led the team in defense with 13 digs and adding four kills of her own.
Alcorn returns to the court Sunday, Oct. 9, when the Braves travel to Montgomery, Alabama for the second SWAC Cluster event of the season. Once in Montgomery, the Braves will face off against teams from Bethune-Cookman, Alabama State and Jackson State, respectfully.
