BOULDER, Colo. –
Nia McCalphia poured in a team-high 11 points while teammate
Tyginae Wright added 10 points of her own as Alcorn Women's Basketball fell to Colorado by a score of 82-47 inside the CU Events Center on Friday evening.
Alcorn (4-5) trailed 19-13 after one quarter of play.
Nia McCalphia poured in five of her 11 points on the night in the opening period for the Braves, as she finished 2-for-2 from the floor in the opener, including a shot from beyond the arc. But it was the play of Colorado (9-3) center Quay Miller scoring 10 points for the host Buffaloes, including two (2) three-pointers to power CU throughout the period.
Colorado used a 7-0 run in the early stages of the second quarter to eventually break the game open and extend the Buffaloes lead at 30-16 with 7:02 remaining in the first half.
Alcorn cut the lead at 32-24 behind a three-pointer from McCalphia, as well as a five-point outburst across one minute of play by guard
Zy'Nyia White.
However, the Buffaloes would take a 39-24 lead into the locker room at the break.
The bench would come into play for Alcorn in the third quarter with seven players scoring for the Purple and Gold in the period.
Ashanti Backus and
Kiarra Henderson combined for six points off the bench for the Braves, while
T'Naye Griffin and
Kailyn Watkins added three points. The Braves shot 40 percent from the field in the third quarter, but Colorado countered with a 50 percent shooting touch from the field – adding a 60 percent mark from three-point range, to lead 57-40 heading into the final quarter of play.
Colorado would outscore the Braves, 15-7 in the final period.
Colorado was led in the game by four players in double-figures scoring, including a game-high 21-point performance from Frida Formann. Aaronette Vonleh (14), Miller (12) and Tayanna Jones (11) rounded out the double-figure scorers. Brianna McLeod led all players with eight rebounds.
Tyginae Wright's 10 points and McCalphia's 11 led the Braves in scoring, with Wright adding three steals in a defensive effort. Henderson chipped in with seven rebounds. And it was
Destiny Brown supplying a team-high three assists.
Alcorn gets back to action Monday, Dec. 19, as the Braves continue their three-game road spell at Louisiana-Monroe. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
