VICKSBURG, Miss. – Junior pitcher Lexi Veamoi pitched her first complete-game shutout of the season on Saturday as the Alcorn State softball team blanked Alabama A&M, 9-0 to split a doubleheader on day two of the River City Classic II. The Braves fell 3-2 versus Eastern Illinois in the second game.
GAME ONE
Veamoi was sensational in the circle on Saturday against AAMU, going the distance to pick up her first win of the season on the mound for a 1-3 record. The Athens, Ga. native did not allow any Bulldog batters to reach second base and only allowed one hit in the contest.
The Braves scored five runs in the first inning on three RBI hits from Kristian Edwards, Marsha Hunt, and Jillian Walters, a passed ball, and a walk.
In the bottom of the fourth, Alcorn added four on a single from Edwards and Tyesha Cole, a double by Hunt, and a ground out from the bat of Kelsey Lockridge.
The Braves put up nine runs on nine hits and three AAMU errors. Hunt and Edwards led the team with 2-for-3 plate appearances with two runs and two RBIs. Hunt also had a double in the effort.
GAME TWO
In opposition to the effort in the first game, Alcorn did not see the same success at the plate in game two. Against the Panthers, the Braves had just two hits while allowing seven.
Ta'Niyah Fletcher was credited with the loss in the circle. The Atlanta, Ga. native pitched her first complete game of the season for seven hits against, three earned runs, and three walks.
Eastern Illinois struck first in the opening frame of the competition, scoring a run on a bases-loaded ground out.
The Braves would tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the third, with Walters scoring a run on a fielder's choice.
The Cougars regained the lead with a run on a single in the fourth and a third and final run on a double in the fifth.
In the final inning, Alcorn attempted a comeback but fell short, scoring one run on an error for a final score of 3-2.
Edwards and Amari Ramsey led the Braves with one hit each, and Chole Morgan recorded Alcorn's lone RBI.
