LORMAN, Miss. – Vying to stay among the top of league standings, the Alcorn State men's basketball team prepares to face Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Feb. 26, inside the William "Billy" J Nicks Dome.
The Braves (11-15, 10-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) took four of their last five contest, including a 61-60 nail-biting victory against Jackson State University last weekend. Kenodre Montgomery led Alcorn off the bench with 15 points, while Dominic Brewton and Byron Joshua had 14 and 11, respectively.
The Braves are tied for second with Southern in the conference standings, averaging 64.8 points per game on the season, shooting 41.0 percent from the field and 72.8 percent at the free-throw line. Against conference opponents, Alcorn State hits 69.9 points while allowing 66.4.
Montgomery heads the Braves to average 9.7 points per game, and Justin Thomas comes in a close second with 9.5 points. Brewton carries the team in rebounding with 5.0 boards per game, and Lenell Henry has 4.9.
In January, Alcorn narrowly lost to Prairie View, falling 74-73 in regulation. Four Braves scored in the double-figures, as Darrious Agnew led the team with 18 points. Henry and Brewton had 12 points each, and Oddyst Walker added 11.
On the Panthers' side, William Douglas led the squad with 21 points, Jeremiah Gambrell had 16, and Jawaun Daniels added 10.
Prairie View is 8-15 overall and 7-7 in conference play. After defeating Mississippi Valley 69-64 in Itta Bena Saturday, the Panthers enter the matchup on a four-game winning streak.
The Panthers score 70.2 per game and 73.2 points in conference play on the season. Daniels leads the squad with 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds.
