Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – Four Braves hit double-figures in the Alcorn State men's basketball team's 75-72 victory over Texas Southern Monday night. ASU improves to 13-15 on the season and 12-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with the victory.
This week's BOXTOROW National Player of the Week Justin Thomas hit 12 points, tying Darrious Agnew to lead the team. Dominic Brewton and Keondre Montgomery scored 11 points each to round out the double-digit scoring for the Braves.
Along with double-digit points, Thomas contributed three rebounds and five assists in the effort, while Brewton had a team-high eight boards with four assists.
Alcorn State shot 40.0 percent from the field, hitting 26 of their 65 attempts. Seven of 19 (36.8 percent) from beyond the arc were included, with 16 of 23 (69.6 percent) at the line.
Texas Southern (14-12, 12-5 SWAC) hit 24 of 63 (38.1 percent) from the floor, with six of 23 (26.1 percent) in the three-point range. At the line, the Tigers made 18 of 28 (64.3 percent).
Bryson Etienne led TSU with a game-high 15 points, and Brison Gresham had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Alcorn grabbed the game's first points as Dontrell McQuarters landed a jumper seconds after tipoff. ASU did not stay in the lead for long; less than a minute later, the game was tied at 4.
The Braves regained the lead with 12:18 remaining in the half, going on a 12-1 run to take a 16-5 advantage.
Alcorn stayed in the lead for the rest of the half to enter the break with a 34-26 lead.
Coming back from half-time, Texas Southern scored the first points on a dunk by Gresham. Oddyst Walker answered for the Braves with a three-pointer, starting a score for score trade.
The shots slowed for the Braves with under four minutes left to play, and Texas Southern slowly began to chip away at Alcorn's lead.
Etienne hit a three-pointer with just nine seconds left to put the Tigers within three, 72-69. Byron Joshua went to the line for Braves and made both free throws to give Alcorn a 74-69 advantage.
Etienne came through again for Texas Southern with another three-pointer with three seconds left, but it was not enough to put the Tigers back in the game.
Thomas split free throws for ASU at the line for the game's final point, and Alcorn took the competition, 75-72.
The Braves men's basketball team will be back in action on Thursday, March 3, hosting Mississippi Valley State University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
