LORMAN, Miss. – After a weather delay postponed the series, the Braves softball team opened conference play on Sunday against Texas Southern at the Alcorn Softball Complex. Alcorn State dropped both contests of the doubleheader to go 0-2 in the series.
The Braves lost game one 3-1 after falling behind, 2-0 in early sets. The Tigers scored their first two runs in the top of the second, sending a base runner home on a sacrifice fly and advancing another on an error by Alcorn.
The next three innings passed by scoreless until the Braves scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth. Chole Morgan came home on a sacrifice fly by Kristian Edwards.
Texas Southern scored their final run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error.
Alcorn had six hits in the contest with two errors. Genise Wells led the team with two hits on three plate appearances while Edwards had one RBI and Morgan had one run.
Lexi Veamoi (1-5) pitched her second complete game in the loss. The Athens, Ga. native had five hits against, three runs (one earned), two walks, and one strikeout.
Jaz Gendorf also threw a complete game, occupying the circle for the Tigers. She recorded six hits against, one earned run, one walk, and one strikeout.
Julia Bilbao led Texas Southern's offense with a 2-for-2 appearance with two runs.
Alcorn State fought hard in the second contest, forcing extra innings after tying the game in the sixth. The Braves held strong for 10-innings but ultimately fell, 5-4.
Alcorn struck first as Marsha Hunt doubled to left-center to score Morgan. The Tigers tied the Braves in the next frame when a runner came home on a wild pitch.
In the third inning, the Braves took a 3-1 advantage as Morgan scored her second run on a fielder's choice, and Edwards came home on a single by Tyesha Tcake Cole.
Texas Southern cut the lead to 3-2, bringing in another runner on a sacrifice fly. The Tigers jumped ahead 4-3 with two runs scored in the sixth. One base runner came in on a single and another on a fly ball.
The Braves tied the contest at four when Miracle Crosby tripled to left field to bring home Cole.
The matchup remained tied through three innings. Finally, in the top of the tenth, Texas Southern took advantage of Alcorn's errors to score one run and win the game.
Kiri Parker pitched the longest game of her career, remaining in the circle for the entire 10-innings. The Vacherie, La. native, faced 47 batters for nine hits against, five runs (four earned), seven walks, and four strikeouts.
At the plate, Cole had a 2-for-4 appearance with one run, and one RBI, and Morgan led the team in runs with two.
The Braves will be back in action tomorrow for the final game of the Texas Southern series. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
