PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Alcorn State softball team ended a 16-game losing streak and prevented a conference series sweep, taking one of three at Prairie View A&M over the weekend. The Braves move to 8-18 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Panthers are 3-20 and 3-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Game One (L, 5-1)
Genise Wells and Kristian Edwards picked up one hit each in the opening contest of the three-game series. Edwards added a run and Miracle Crosby had one RBI as the Braves recorded one run on two hits.
Lexi Veamoi (1-6) received the loss in the circle, pitching 4.2 innings for seven hits against, five earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.
PVAM struck first, scoring two runs on a homer in the second inning. The Braves would put the score at 2-1 in the fifth, with Edwards coming on a sacrifice fly from Crosby.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs, scoring on two singles.
Game Two (L, 10-5)
Tyesha Cole led the Braves offense in the second game of the series. The Philadelphia, Miss. native had two hits on two at-bats with a run and an RBI. Amari Ramsey went 1-for-2 with one run and had a team-high two RBIs.
A'Mya Stevens (0-1) entered the game in relief and was credited with the loss. In the sixth, she took the circle pitching 1.2 innings for five hits against, five earned runs, and two walks.
The Braves lead for most of the game with a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Panthers reached home first, scoring a run on a homer in the second inning.
Alcorn locked the board at 1-1 in the fourth as Wells scored on a sacrifice fly by Mycah Hall. Prairie View answered in the bottom of the innings, sending two runners home on a single to center field for a score of 3-1.
A big fifth inning gave Braves their first lead of the game. Jillian Walters came home one a sacrifice fly. Marsha Hunt scored on a single by Cole, and Ramsey hit a two-RBI homer.
PVAM added seven runs in the bottom of the inning on five hits to jump ahead 10-5 for the win.
Game Three (W, 8-6)
Alcorn State grabbed its first victory in a month, defeating the Panthers 8-6 in the final contest of the three-game series.
Cole led the Braves with a 3-for-4 appearance, including a home run and a double, for two runs and one RBI. Kelsey Lockridge had a game-high four RBIs with one run and one hit on one plate appearance.
Edwards began the scoring effort for the Braves with a home run in the first inning. The Panthers added two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 advantage.
A sacrifice fly by Edwards in the second to bring Crosby home tied the game at two, but a two-RBI single in the bottom pushed PVAM ahead 4-2.
A home run by Cole cut the Panthers' lead to 4-3, but another two ribbies single in the fourth would give Prairie View a 6-3 advantage.
The Braves scored five runs in the seventh inning to take the 8-6 victory. Desirea Lindsey single to score Wells, and Lockridge hits a grand slam to come home, bringing Lindsey, Ramsey, and Cole with her.
Lexi Veamoi grabbed her second win in the circle. The Athens, Ga. native pitched 2.0 innings for one hit against.
