LORMAN, Miss. – Chloey Morgan and Amari Ramsey connected for three hits each in a league match-up Friday night to help lift the Alcorn State softball team to an 11-3 run rule over Grambling State University in five innings.
Morgan, a senior from Batesville, Miss., opened and closed the scoring for the Braves in the contest. She launched a single up the middle in the bottom of the second inning with runners on every base for two RBIs, and she scored Alcorn's game-ending run on a single by Marsha Hunt. Morgan had a three-for-four appearance with three runs and two RBIs.
Ramsey was perfect at the plate with three at-bats for three hits, two runs, and one RBI. She also had one double in the outing.
The Braves, with the win, improve to 9-18 on the season and 2-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Grambling suffers its fifth loss in league play to go 2-5 but is 12-12 overall.
"We have been preaching on extended the game with two outs all season," said head coach Josef Rankin. "It is finally good to see us executing. We did an outstanding job; all but one of our runs were scored with two outs. Overall, from top to bottom, we did a good job today."
On the mound, Lexi Veamoi (3-6) pitched her third complete game for the win in the circle. She faced 20 batters for six hits against, three runs (one earned), one walk, and six strikeouts.
"We were a little slow coming off the first inning, but I trusted my defense and teammates to have my back," said Veamoi on her team's performance. "Throughout the second inning, we were able to get in our grove and get our rhythm back. I had to keep focus, make sure I was spending the ball and hitting my spot."
The Braves and the Tigers will return to the Alcorn State Softball Complex tomorrow, Saturday, March 26, for the final two games of the three-game series. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
