LORMAN, Miss. – The Lady Braves softball team dominated Grambling State University on day two of the weekend series, taking both games of the doubleheader for their first series sweep of the 2022 season. Across the two contests, Alcorn State delivered 19 hits for 14 runs while holding the Tigers to 10 hits and two runs.
The Braves extended their winning streak to four games while improving to 11-18 overall and 4-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Grambling falls to 12-14 on the season and 2-7 in conference play.
GAME ONE (W, 8-2)
Marsha Hunt had a standout performance in the first outing of the day. The Philadelphia, Miss. native had four at-bats with two hits, including one double, for a game-high of three RBIs. Genise Wells and Jillian Walters also had a good game with identical stat lines of three at-bats, two hits, one run, and one RBI.
Vacherie, La. native Kiri Parker pitched her fourth complete game to improve to 4-3 on the season. She is now the only Braves pitcher with a winning record with a season-high eight strikeouts, three walks, and two runs (one earned). Grambling saw six hits against her.
Tcake Cole scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning on a ground out by Kelsey Lockridge.
The Braves extended their lead to 2-0 as Desirea Lindsey scored on a triple by Kristian Edwards in the third.
Grambling finally reached the board in the fifth inning, scoring an unearned run on an error by the Alcorn shortstop.
A homerun by Wells in the sixth gave the Braves a 3-1 advantage, and Alcorn continued to score in the inning. Amari Ramsey reached home on an error by the Tiger's first baseman, and a double by Hunt scored Chloey Morgan and Walters.
Grambling entered the seventh inning trailing Alcorn 8-1, but a run scored on a wild pitch would close the game at 8-2.
GAME TWO (W, 6-0)
The Lady Braves issued their fifth shutout of the season to the Tigers in the closing game of the series. Brenn Ursin (3-6) pitched her second complete game of the season with just four hits against and five strikeouts.
Kristian Edwards led Alcorn's offense with a perfect three-for-three appearance with two runs and two RBIs. Tcake Cole had a game-high three ribbies with two hits (one triple), and Chloey Morgan went two-for-four.
The Braves garnered an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Edwards singled up the middle to bring Genise Wells and Marsha Hunt home, and a triple to left-center off the bat of Cole scored Edwards.
Alcorn extended its lead to five as Cole scored Edwards and Hunt on a single in the third, and Miracle Crosby scored the Braves' last run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.
