JACKSON, Miss. – The Alcorn State Baseball team dropped its second game of the weekend series at Jackson State University, 12-2, inside Robert 'Bob' Braddy Field on Saturday afternoon. The Braves fall 0-6 on the season as JSU improves to 7-5.
Jermel Ford took the loss on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings for six hits against, five earned runs, five walks, and two strikeouts. Austin Guzman occupied the mound for the sixth inning to face nine batters for four hits against, four runs (two earned), and one walk. Payton Baylis pitched the final two innings for a strikeout and two hits against.
The Braves record two runs on five hits with three errors in the effort. Jamil Betancourt went 2-for-3 at the plate for one RBI, and Ryan Sonnier and Jordan Holt scored one run each. Jamaal Green was credited with Alcorn's only other RBI.
For the win, Erick Gonzales pitched 6.0 innings for Jackson State. He faced 22 batters for four hits against, two earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts. Jesse Cavers closed the competition for 3.0 innings pitched, one hit against, and three strikeouts.
The story began to form in the bottom of the first inning, as Jackson State scored three runs on two hits and an error. The Tigers added one run in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to jump ahead 6-0.
The Braves put up a run in the fifth frame as Ryan Sonnier led off with a single to left field. He would then come home on a single to center field by Bentancourt. Alcorn State trailed JSU, 6-1.
Back-to-back walks put two runners on base for the Braves in the sixth inning. Green singled to right field with two outs to score Alcorn's second and final run.
Jackson State answered at the bottom of the frame. The Tigers put up four runs on four hits to take a 12-2 advantage.
The remaining innings would go by scoreless as JSU claimed the 12-2 victory.
The Braves will be back in action for the third and final game of the Jackson State series on Sunday, March 6. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
