LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State women's basketball team's season came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the Braves fell 64-41 to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Saturday was also the Braves Senior Night, and LaRae Rascoe and Bria Broughton were recognized for their contributions to the Alcorn women's basketball program, playing in their final game.
Tyginae Wright and Kailyn Watkins led Alcorn State with eight points each. Wright also had nine rebounds as Watkins added three assists.
As a squad, the Braves 28.6 percent from the field, making just 14 of 49 shots, including four of 20 (20.0 percent) in three-point range. Alcorn added nine points on the line after attempting 14 shots.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored 19 of hits 52 (36.5 percent) shot attempts from the floor, with 5 of 18 (27.8 percent) from beyond the arc. At the line, the Golden Lions added 21 on 25 attempts (84.0 percent).
UAPB scored first, connecting for a layup just five seconds after tip-off. It would be the only basket for an extended amount of time.
The two-minute scoring drought ended, as Broughton sank a layup to tie the score at two with 7:27 left in the first quarter.
The Golden Lions put some distance between them and the Braves, going on a 10-2 run to lead by eight at the three-minute mark. Akryiale Ford split shots at the free-throw line for Alcorn to put the score at 12-5, but a three-point shot by Joyce Kennerson for Arkansas-Pine Bluff would give the Golden Lions a 15-5 advantage going into the second quarter.
In the remaining periods, the Golden Lions would continue to outscore the Braves. With 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, a layup by Shekinah Rachel would give UAPB its largest lead of the game and the 64-41 victory.
The Braves end the season 3-22 and 2-16 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Arkansas Pine Bluff concludes the regular season with a 13-15 record and 9-9 in conference play. The Golden Lions have also earned a bid to the SWAC Championship Tournament and will begin postseason competitions next week in Birmingham, Ala.
