Braves End Bulldog Invitational with a 14-1 Loss to Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Braves softball team goes 0-4 in the Bulldog Invitational, dropping the tournament's final game 14-1 against the host Mississippi State University. With the loss, Alcorn State moves to  7-13 on the season.

Brenn Ursin (2-5) pitched 2.0 innings against the Bulldogs and was credited with the loss in the circle. Ursin started the contest to pitch 2.0 innings for 13 batters faced, six hits against, six earned runs, and two walks.

Junior pitcher Kiri Parker took over pitching duties for the third inning with two hits against, five earned runs, and six walks. Ta'Niyah Fletcher pitched the final inning with three hits, three earned runs, and two walks.

The Braves saw one run and one hit in the contest with three errors. Marsha Hunt had a 1-for-1 appearance with one run, and Kelsey Lockridge grabbed Alcorn's only RBI.

Mississippi State (14-8) had 14 runs on 11 hits. Addison Purvis led the effort, going 2-for-2 with one home run, and four RBIs. Matalasi Faapito (2-0) was credited with the win, pitching the first three innings for one hit against, three walks, and four strikeouts.

A chunk of the damage was dealt in the bottom of the first frame. The Bulldogs scored one run on a wild pitch, a second on a double to right-center, and brought two home on a home run to left field. Mississippi State led the Braves, 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, MSU added five more runs. The Bulldogs had a grand slam for four runs and added a fifth on a single to the shortstop.

The Braves scored their only run in the top of the fourth. Lockridge scored Marsha Hunt on a sacrifice fly.

Mississippi State extended its lead to 14-1 with five runs in the fifth. MSU brought a runner home on a double, a second on an error, two on a single to center field, and a fifth on a single to third base.

The Braves will have five days to rest and regroup before hosting Texas Southern on Friday, March 11 in the first game of a three-game series. The first pitch is at 6 p.m.
