BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season title, the Alcorn State men's basketball team received post-season league honors, announced on Tuesday by the conference. Coach Landon Bussie was named SWAC Coach of the Year, and Justin Thomas received All-SWAC Second Team distinction.
The Braves men's basketball team finished the regular season with a 15-15 record that included a 14-4 league record, a 6-3 record at home, and a No. 1 seed entering the SWAC Championship Tournament.
During the 2021-22 season, Thomas received several accolades, including SWAC Impact Player of the Week and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week. The graduate student from Indianapolis, Ind., has played in 26 games with 25 starts to be the leading scorer on the Alcorn State men's basketball team. He shoots 48.4 percent from the field, including 29.2 percent in three-point range and 74.5 percent at the free-throw line. Thomas averages 10.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game.
Coach Bussie took the reins of the Braves men's basketball team in April of 2020 as a first-time head coach and took the team to a SWAC regular-season title in his second year. The regular-season title marked Alcorn State's first championship in men's basketball in two decades (2001-02). As an assistant coach, the Xavier University graduate is no stranger to conference titles, picking up championship rings at his previous two stops.
The Alcorn State men's basketball team will begin their post-season journey on Wednesday, March 9, taking on Prairie View A&M in the quarterfinal round of the SWAC Championship Tournament. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. CT at the Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. Follow the action at SWAC.org.
