LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State baseball team took a 3-2 lead over Southern University in game three of the weekend series. Unfortunately, the Braves could not hold on to the advantage to fall 14-3 to the Jaguars Sunday afternoon at Bill Foster Field inside William 'Rat' McGowan Stadium. Alcorn falls to 1-22 on the season and 1-11 in conference play.
Southern brought in their first two runners on a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, and a sacrifice fly to lead 2-0 going into the bottom of the frame.
Bats caught fire for the Braves to provide a three-run answer in the first, pushing Alcorn ahead 3-2. Diego Lopez-Molina and Jamal Green connected for triples for an RBI each in the action. Green would then come home on a ground out.
The second inning was scoreless, but the Jaguars would score one run in the third, three in the fifth, and four runs in the seventh and eighth inning for the 14- 3 victory.
Against the Jaguars, the Braves laid down nine hits and committed one error. Lopez-Molina and Khalil Smith led the effort with a 3-for-4 appearance. Lopez-Molina also added one ribbie and one run.
On the mound, Austin Guzman (1-4) was credited with the loss. The freshman pitched 4.1 innings for seven hits against, four runs, four walks, and one strikeout.
Southern tallied 18 hits versus the Braves and had one error. JJ Rollon and Nathaniel Lai led their team with a perfect 4-for-4 appearance. Lai added a game-high four RBIs and Rollon had a game-high four runs.
Next week, the Braves return to action, traveling to Pine Bluff, Ark., to face conference foe UAPB for a three-game series. The first contest is set for Friday, April 15, at 6 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday competitions at 1 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
