NEW ORLEANS – The Alcorn State men's tennis team closed out the 2022 season in the semifinal round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday. The No. 3 Braves fell 4-1 to the No. 2 Tigers at the Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans, La.
JSU grabbed an early lead, taking two sets in the doubles contest. Tiger duo Francisco Vargas and Richy Gamo grabbed the first set on court three, defeating Alcorn pair Santiago Rocca and Kareem Bowe 6-2. Juan Soria and Raul Centeno then took down David Pata and Lucas Dini on court one 7-4 to give JSU the doubles point.
In the singles competition, Luka Andonov grabbed the first point on court three 6-3, 6-1 over Juan Soria to tie the match at 1-1. Unfortunately, it was the only point for Alcorn during the contest and JSU defeated the Braves 4-1.
Braves tennis closes the 2022 season 6-13 and 3-2 in league play. Andonov received SWAC All-Tournament Team honors for his effort during the championship tournament.
