Lady Braves Fall 2-1 in Extra Innings at Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas. – The Lady Braves took the No. 1 team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division to 10 innings Friday afternoon in the first game of the three-game series, but it was not enough to claim the opening victory. The Tigers outlast Alcorn 2-1 in the contest at Memorial Park.

The Lady Braves move to 16-28 on the season and 9-10 in SWAC play, while Texas Southern moves to 22-17 overall and 19-3 in league contests.

Alcorn had four players connect for hits. Kristen Edwards, Marsha Hunt, Hannah Dukes, and Miracle Crosby recorded one single each. Chole Morgan grabbed the Lady Braves' only RBI, and Kennedy Terry scored the run.

Lexi Veamoi (4-11) took the loss on the mound. She pitched the complete game for six hits against, two runs (one earned), four walks, and three strikeouts.

On Texas Southern's side of the plate, Tevana Tate led the Tigers with a 2-for-4 appearance for one run and one RBI. Jaz Gendorf recorded the pitching victory with 10 innings pitched, four hits, one earned run, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Alcorn scored the first run of the competition in the top of the first inning. Dukes led off the inning, singling to center field. Terry entered the game to pinch run. Crosby advanced Terry to second base on a sacrifice bunt. She then ran to third on a passed ball. Morgan collected the ribbie, sending Terry home on a ground out to the shortstop and putting the Lady Braves ahead 1-0.

Texas Southern locked the board in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by Tate.

The game remained tied at one until the bottom of the 10th inning. The Tigers took the win on a single by Ta McKnight that scored Juile Bilbao, who was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule for extra innings. Texas Southern won 2-1.

The two teams return to action on Saturday, April 30 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Memorial Park.
