Cole Connects for Four Hits as Texas Southern Completes the Sweep

HOUSTON, Texas – Tyesha Tcake Cole had four hits, three runs, and four runs batted in, but it was not enough to pick up a victory against the No. 1 Texas Southern in a Saturday doubleheader. The Tigers completed the sweep of the Lady Braves with scores of 6-1 and 14-5.

Kiri Parker (6-7) pitched her eighth complete game of the season in the first contest of the day, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with four strikeouts as the junior suffered her seven loss of the season. In game two, Brenn Ursin (4-8) went 3.1 innings, allowing no walks and striking out two batters. She also saw 15 hits against for 13 runs (12 earned).

Offensively, the Lady Braves had difficulties staying ahead, with Cole having the best outing of the day, sparkling for four hits, three in game two, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Included in the hits for Cole were a home run and a double.

Jordan McClain connected for five hits (three in game two), five runs, and four ribbies to head the Texas Southern offense in the doubleheader. The Tigers outscored the Lady Braves 20-6 on the day for their fifth series sweep of the season.

In game one, Lailah Bell (3-2)  threw for her third complete game and third victory of the season with two hits against, one earned run, no walks, and one strikeout. Tierrah Williams (3-0) occupied the mound for 3.2 innings in game two, remaining undefeated in the circle. She saw five hits against, four runs (three earned), two walks, and two strikeouts.

Alcorn State moves to 16-30 overall and remains in the thick of the Southwestern Athletic Conference race with a 9-12 league record as the SWAC season winds down. Texas Southern, with the sweep, improves to 24-17 and 21-3 in conference play.

The Lady Braves will play at Grambling State on Tuesday and Wednesday in a makeup series rescheduled from a previous date. Tuesday's contest begins at 3 p.m., and Wednesday's doubleheader will start at noon.
