PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Sophomore Tyesha Tcake Cole crosses home plate twice, once in the first and seventh, to lift the Lady Braves over conference-rival Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday to defeat the Golden Lions 3-2 in the series opener.
Lexi Veamoi picked up her fourth win in 16 appearances in the circle as she threw a complete game. The junior from Athens, Ga., only allowed two seventh-inning runs on five hits and three strikeouts. Veamoi is now 4-9 on the season in the circle for Alcorn State.
The Lady Braves scored three runs with three hits. Kristian Edwards collected a triple and an RBI, while Marsha Hunt had one double for an RBI. Desirea Lindsey also connected for one hit.
Sydney Green (3-9) was credited with the pitching loss. She threw the complete game for three runs (two earned), 10 walks, and seven strikeouts.
The Golden Lions tallied five hits for two runs. Five players had single hits for UAPB, and two scored runs.
Alcorn State kept the Golden Lions scoreless until the seventh inning and put up runs in the first, fourth, and seventh frames. Cole scored the first run, coming in on a ground out by Hunt in the first. Crosby scored a second run for Alcorn in the fourth on a triple to right-center off the bat of Edwards. The Lady Braves' final run was achieved in the last inning, as Cole came home on an error by the UAPB catcher.
With bases load in the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Lions were poised for a rally. The team came close, scoring two runs on a double by Marissa Bracey, but it was not enough to extend the contest.
The Lady Braves return to the Torii Hunter Softball complex on Saturday, April 9, to conclude the series with a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
