Box Score 2 PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Lady Braves softball team splits the day but takes the series on the final day of contests against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday. Alcorn State grabbed the first game of the day 9-0 for its seventh shutout of the season but dropped the second 6-4 at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
With the completion of the doubleheader, the Lady Braves take the UAPB series 2-1 and move to 15-24 overall and 8-7 in conference play. The Golden Lions are now 5-31 on the season and 3-12 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
GAME ONE (W, 9-0)
The Lady Braves racked up nine hits for nine runs in the first outing of the day. Amari Ramsey and Kelsey Lockridge led the team at the plate with 2-for-3 appearances with two runs. Lockridge also brought in an RBI, while Kristian Edwards led the team in ribbies with three.
In the circle, Kiri Parker (5-5) claimed her fifth win, pitching the entire five-inning game for only two hits. She had only one walk and sat down batters on six strikeouts.
Things moved in a positive direction early for Alcorn as the Lady Braves scored their first run of the day in the top of the first. Genise Wells landed a hit to left field to bring in Chloey Morgan, and the Braves took a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Alcorn jumped up 4-0 as Desirea Lindsey hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Lockridge, and Edwards hit a two-RBI homer.
The Braves added three more runs in the third frame. Lockridge recorded her RBI on a single to right field, and a bases-loaded walk scored Ramey. With bases still loaded, another walk scored Lockridge.
Alcorn scored its final two runs in the fourth on a fielder's choice, resulting in an error that brought in two.
GAME TWO (L, 6-4)
UAPB saw better hitting in the second game, connecting for 11 to score six runs and end a four-game winning drought. Alcorn also had action at the plate but was limited to just six hits to score four runs.
Leading the Lady Braves' offensive effort, Tyesha Tcake Cole had a 2-for-3 appearance with two runs scored. Four separate players grabbed one RBI each, and Lockridge and Lindsey had one hit apiece.
Brenn Ursin (6-8) was credited with the loss. She pitched 2.1 innings for seven hits against, and four earned runs. Ta'Niyah Fletcher entered in the third inning to close out the game with four hits against, two earned runs, and three strikeouts.
By the time the fifth inning was played, Alcorn had found itself down 5-0 as UAPB scored at least one run in every previous frame. The Lady Braves made the most of it, scoring three runs in the inning with Lockridge coming in on a sacrifice fly, Lindsey singling to score Cole, and Cole coming home on a single from Morgan.
A home run by the Golden Lions in the bottom of the frame placed the score at 6-3, and after a scoreless sixth, the Lady Braves added their final run on a fielder's choice.
UP NEXT
The Alcorn State Softball team will get a week off before traveling to Grambling, La., for a series rematch against Grambling State University. The first contest is set for Friday, April 15, at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
