HOUSTON, Texas – Khalil Smith had five hits on 11 at-bats against the Tigers of Texas Southern during the Braves' three-game conference series over the weekend. Despite batting .455 with a 1.091 slugging percentage, Smith could not lead the Alcorn baseball team to a victory as the Braves fell 12-6, 13-3, and 10-4.
After the sweep, Alcorn falls to 2-32 on the season and 2-21 in conference play. Texas Southern improves to 24-20 overall and 15-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Smith collected one double, two home runs, two ribbies, and five runs with the five hits over the three contests. Garrett Palladino added four hits (one double) with 10 at-bats, two RBIs, and one run. Tyler Daniels had three with 12-at-bats, three hits (two doubles), and two runs leading the team in RBIs.
In the first game of the series, senior pitcher Andrew Meadows (0-6) received his sixth loss of the season on the mound. The Atlanta, Ga. native started the competition, throwing for 2.0 innings with one hit against, four earned runs, and five walks.
Jermel Ford (0-7) pitched the first five innings of game two with six hits against, eight runs (seven earned), three walks, and four strikeouts to take the loss, and Austin Guzman took the loss in the final game with 4.0 innings pitched, nine hits against, eight runs (seven earned), three walks, and two strikeouts.
The Braves will return to action this weekend when they host Arkansas – Pine Bluff in the final home series of the season. The first game will be Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m., with a 3 p.m. game on Saturday and a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
