LORMAN, Miss. – Fresh off the heels of the first win of 2022 over the weekend at the ISTAP HBCU Challenge, Alcorn State Volleyball travels to face Louisiana-Monroe for a midweek nonconference match on Tuesday, Sept. 13, in Monroe, Louisiana.
Alcorn State (1-8) faced three tough teams from the weekend in the form of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes from Delaware State, South Carolina State and Coppin State, respectively. The Braves grabbed a 3-0 straight-set win from S.C. State, while dropping a pair of straight-set matches to the Hornets and Eagles, respectfully.
ULM (3-7) enters Tuesday's contest having lost four matches on the bounce, including all three from the weekend at the UCA Invitational hosted by Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas. The Warhawks played teams from host Central Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and Southern Illinois. The match against Louisiana Tech went to five sets, with the Techsters collecting the fifth set by a 15-9 score.
Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Preseason Second Team member
Mikenzie Young-Mullins, employed as an outside hitter, was used as a hybrid hitter/defensive specialist over the weekend by Head Coach
Melissa Robinson and her staff. Mullins, a redshirt senior from Duncan, South Carolina, led the Purple and Gold with 32 digs across three matches from the weekend, adding four service aces and three assists.
Faith Archibong led the Braves' attack with her offensive exploits, as the Shawnee, Kansas middle blocker accumulated 24 kills over the weekend. Against S.C. State and Coppin State, Archibong hit at a .353 clip in each of those matches.
Freshman setter
Ramona Pulu quarterbacked the offense of the Braves, amassing 57 assists across the three weekend matches in Montgomery, Alabama. In the team's first win of the campaign, Pulu registered a match- and season-high 24 assists, adding a kill and a service ace as well against South Carolina State.
The last time the Braves and Warhawks met on the volleyball court was Sept. 22, 2019, with host ULM securing a 3-0 win on scores of 25-9, 25-12 and 25-14. The two teams also met as part of the Jacksonville State Tournament on Sept. 8, 2018, in Jacksonville, Alabama. ULM also collected that victory from the Braves courtesy a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-11) decision.
