VB Report | Braves Tripped Up at ULM

Archibong posts double-digit kills in loss

MONROE, La. – Alcorn State middle blocker Faith Archibong registered her first double-digit kills performance of the 2022 campaign on Tuesday evening, as the Braves fell to Louisiana-Monroe in nonconference volleyball action by a score of 3-0 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks took the win on scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15.

Alcorn State (1-9) trailed 17-15 in the opening set after a kill from junior Faith Archibong off the assist from Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Preseason Second Team selection Mikenzie Young-Mullins. But a 7-1 run sparked by back-to-back kills from Madeline Williams allowed homestanding ULM to run out to a 24-16 advantage.

The Warhawks collected a kill from Taylor Thomas to claim the opening frame.

ULM (4-7) was tied with the Braves at 4-all after Archibong registered one of her team-high 10 kills in the match for the Purple and Gold, during the opening stages of the second set. However, the Warhawks used consecutive attack errors charged to the Braves and a service ace from Madeline Williams in order to run out to an 8-4 advantage. Bailey Roberson and Logan Jeffus combined for kills to increase the lead for ULM at 12-6, followed by a 3-0 run from the home team aided by a block from Madeline Villarreal and another kill from Williams off the set of Roberson.

A service error would end the frame and give ULM the 2-0 lead heading into the break between the second and third set, respectively.

Despite the visitors hitting .219 in the third set, the Warhawks countered by hitting an even 50 percent in the frame with 11 kills on just 22 swings against zero (0) attack errors.

The Braves were led on the night by Archibong's 10 kills. Jeda Curry and Alaina Armstrong backed her up with seven kills each in the loss. The sets were supplied by freshman Ramona Pulu, finishing the match with a team-high 22 assists. And the defense was spearheaded by Young-Mullins with nine digs, as she was backed up nicely by Armstrong with seven digs of her own.

ULM used a match-high 13 kills from Williams, followed by six kills from Taylor Thomas. The sets were placed by Roberson, who finished with a match-high 31 assists in the winning effort. Meanwhile, a pair of Warhawks had double-digit digs in the form of Thomas (11) and Cameron Rogers (10).

Alcorn returns to action Friday, Sept. 16, when the Braves travel to Nashville, Tennessee for the Tennessee State Invitational hosted by Big Blue. Once there, the Braves will face teams from North Alabama and Belmont, in addition to host the Tennessee State Tigers.
