LORMAN, Miss. – Redshirt senior midfielder
D'Ana Prieto scored her second goal of the season on Friday evening, but it wasn't enough as Alcorn dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Chicago State at Jack Spinks – Marino Casem Stadium in women's nonconference soccer action.
El Paso, Texas native
D'Ana Prieto's goal just moments into the second half was enough to see Alcorn (2-5-1) equalize at 1-1, with the driving midfielder controlling
Emily Serrato's pass with a soft touch before placing he ball into the bottom-left corner of the net passed a diving attempt at a stop from Alexa Seiler.
Chicago State (2-8-1) recaptured the lead in the 63rd minute.
Daliisha Spence was fouled in front of goal off a delivery into the box from the Cougars. That gave CSU a penalty kick 62 minutes into the contest, and with the game tied at 1-all.
Not abiding by the old rule of "the person fouled should never take the penalty kick", Spence calmly walked up to the ball and placed it into the top shelf from the spot, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
The game would be put to bed in the 83rd minute, as Mary Perez Aguire scored directly off a corner kick for the Cougars – the second time that occurred in the game. The delivery was whipped in from midfielder Barbara Castellanos, allowing Aguire to get on the end of it at the back post, and slotting it home to seal the win for visitors, 3-1.
CSU opened the game's scoring with the only goal of the first half, using a headed effort down into the ground and into the net directly off a corner from the Cougars' Carmen Acedo.
Seiler collected the win between the posts for the Cougars, while Alcorn's
Mikayla Shaughnessy took the loss in a substitute's effort, as she would go the entire way between the sticks for the Purple and Gold in the second half.
Vivian Lugo was the starter for the Braves in goal.
On the night, Shaughnessy stopped seven shots, including two from point-blank range.
Freshman forward
Samara Nunn had a pair of shots for the Braves to finish as one of the top offensive players, while teammates
Briana Johnson and
Yaisa Reyes recorded a shot each. Prieto matched Nunn with a pair of shots – one of those on target for the Braves' second half goal.
CSU was led in the offensive statistics by midfielder Gisselle Sahagun with a game-high seven shots (three on-target) and a goal. Aguire had four shots, including her goal in the second half. And it was Spence tallying a trio of shots, adding the goal in the second half from the penalty spot.
Alcorn will remain at home for the Braves' next match against Jackson State on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
