BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alcorn Football running back
Jarveon Howard has been named as both Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon from their headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
Â
Howard, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound redshirt senior from Columbia, Mississippi, is earning his second SWAC weekly award of the 2022 campaign, and his first Co-Offensive Player of the Week award. He collected the league's Newcomer of the Week award after his week one performance at home to No. 10 Stephen F. Austin.
Â
Over the weekend in the SWAC-opener for Alcorn, the transfer from Syracuse racked up a game- and season-high 299 yards rushing on 23 carries with four touchdowns in the Braves' 38-21 come-from-behind win over Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The East Marion High alum averaged 13 yards per carry in the game, and also caught one pass out of the backfield for two yards.
Â
Howard contributed scoring runs of 44 yards, 11 yards, 24 yards and 78 yards respectively while playing a key role in the Braves victory.
Â
With his 299 yards rushing, he becomes the first Alcorn player to rush for at 250 yards in a game since
De'Lance Turner registered 272 yards on the ground against Southern in 2017.
Â
Joining Howard as the league's other Co-Offensive Player of the Week was Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The Tigers signal-caller had a career day during the Tigers' 49-7 win over Mississippi Valley State. He set career marks in completions (40), attempts (51), and passing yards (438) to go along with four TD passes. Sanders completed passes to 12 different receivers, including touchdown passes to four different receivers.
Â
Other SWAC weekly award winners include Florida A&M linebacker Isaiah Major as Defensive Player of the Week, and Bethune-Cookman's Darnell Deas Specialist of the Week.
