MARSHALL, Texas –
D'Ana Prieto's 70th-minute goal proved to be the match winner and history maker for Alcorn State Soccer on Sunday, as the Braves defeated East Texas Baptist by a score line of 2-1. The win represented the first time Alcorn had defeated an NCAA opponent in a nonconference game on the road in program history.
Â
Alcorn State (1-3-1) took the lead in the opening half courtesy freshman forward
Samara Nunn's first goal of the season in the 29th minute, after seeing her goal against Grambling State two weeks ago eventually awarded to teammate
Jaidyn Matheu.
Â
Entering as a substitute just eight minutes Earlier, Nunn controlled a pass from teammate
Ha'Teya Holloman and slotted the ball home past East Texas Baptist (1-1-0) goalkeeper Megan McCarthy.
Â
Alcorn would lead 1-0 at halftime.
Â
In the second half, East Texas Baptist equalized with Kayla Nichols scoring her first goal of the 2022 campaign on an assist from Sarah Ramos. That goal came in the 49th minute.
Â
However, the Braves continued to pepper shots around the East Texas Baptist goal until Nunn's shot blazed past reserve keeper Addison Funk for the match-winner.
Â
In all, Alcorn had 15 shots in the game, including 12 on target.
Zea Anderson and Nunn each led the way with three shots apiece.
Â
East Texas Baptist countered with 11 shots (four on target). It was midfielder Amy Pineda registering five shots for her squad, including one on target.
Â
For the Braves, the win went to keeper
Paula Argelaguet in goal. The loss was credited to East Texas Baptist substitute keeper Addison Funk.
Â
The Braves are back in action Tuesday, Sept. 13, when traveling to Nicholls State for a nonconference matchup in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
