LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn made it five wins on the spin Saturday evening, as the Braves defeated visiting Florida A&M 57-47 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball action at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
With defense being a main teaching point for Head Coach
Landon Bussie, his Alcorn (8-10, 5-1 SWAC) side proved a stingy bunch to score against for the Rattlers on Saturday. The Braves limited FAMU to just 12.5 percent shooting from three-point range in the contest.
With FAMU (3-14, 1-5 SWAC) only trailing by an 11-10 score line with 11:43 remaining in the first half, Alcorn used a 9-0 run with the help of
Dominic Brewton and
Ladarius Marshall combining for all of the Braves scoring throughout the course of the run. Following a
Jeremiah Kendall jumper from just outside the paint, the Braves held their largest lead of the half at 28-16 with just over a minute remaining.
FAMU's Richard Mathews would score the bucket and add the free throw for a three-point play to produce the halftime score of 28-19 in favor of the Braves.
In the second half, Alcorn pushed the lead up to 44-26 less than nine minutes in when
Keondre Montgomery connected on a three-pointer off a Rattlers turnover, as well as
Byron Joshua driving the paint for two of his seven points on the night.
The Rattlers would use a 6-0 run of their own late-on as Jordan Tillmon converted a pair of free throws and delivered a layup off the steal, combined with a Jaylen Bates floater in the paint to bring the visitors to within 51-44 with 1:48 remaining in the game.
Joshua and Brewton would toe the line and convert the free throws down the stretch to give the Purple and Gold their third home win of the season, as well as their third in as many games inside the Whitney Complex.
Florida A&M was led by Bates with a game-high 14 points, as teammate Tillmon finished 13 points.
As a team, Alcorn shot 31.3 percent from beyond the arc in the contest, while the Braves managed a 42.6 percent clip from the field overall.
It would be Brewton finishing in double-figures scoring for the Braves, closing the game with 13 points and three rebounds.
The Braves welcome Bethune-Cookman to the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Monday, Jan. 23, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
