LORMAN, Miss. –
Cayla Obillo scored 19 points and
Zy'Nyia White added 18 points of her own to help Alcorn Women's Basketball defeat visiting Florida A&M 72-60 on Saturday afternoon in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest taking place at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Â
A huge fourth quarter helped lift Alcorn (6-11, 2-4 SWAC) to its second league win of the season – and its fifth home win of the campaign.
Â
Florida A&M (3-14, 1-5 SWAC) brought the lead down to 49-46 seconds into the start of the fourth quarter. But a
Kiarra Henderson free throw was followed by a
Maya Claytor three-pointer to pad to the Braves lead at 53-46 just over a minute later.
Â
The Purple and Gold advanced the lead to double-digits when
Zy'Nyia White hit her only three-pointer on the afternoon, putting the Braves up 58-48.
Â
Cayla Obillo added a shot from long-range, and teammate
Tyginae Wright connected from beyond the arc, as the Braves hit on 4-of-5 shots from three-point range during the final period. As a team, Alcorn shot 61.5 percent from the field, including 80 percent from three-point territory in the fourth quarter alone.
Â
FAMU took an early 9-3 lead in the opening quarter behind the efforts of Ivet Subirats and Eliya Ellis. However, a 13-2 run over the next six minutes would see the Braves capture a 16-11 lead with 3:43 remaining in the period.
Â
During the run, it would be Obillo scoring nine of her 19 points for the game in the opening period, including a 4-for-5 shooting touch from the field. The Braves would hold a 23-18 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, the Purple and Gold shooting touch went cold from the field, but was aided at the foul line where Alcorn connected on 5-of-8 attempts to hold a 32-30 lead as the teams went into the locker room at the half.
Â
Florida A&M was led on the afternoon by Dylan Horton with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. Subirats would finish with nine points for the Rattlers.
Â
As for the Braves, Obillo's 19-point performance added to her game-high six assists and two steals. White finished with 18 points as she was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. And it was
Destiny Brown rounding out the Alcorn players in double-figures, as she chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds – culminating in her fourth double-double of the season.
