Southern Holds Off Alcorn, 65-62

Braves fall in first of two games in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. – Despite 16 points from Cayla Obillo, Alcorn Women's Basketball suffered a 65-62 defeat away to Southern (La.) on Saturday, Jan. 28, in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Basketball action at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
 
Alcorn (7-12, 3-5 SWAC) held a 33-27 lead at the half.
 
The Braves limited Southern (9-10, 6-2 SWAC) to just 20 percent shooting in the first quarter, as Alcorn countered with a 5-of-12 shooting touch from the field. The Braves added to that in the second quarter, as Tyginae Wright connected on a three-pointer, as well Akyriale Ford pouring in eight points off the bench with a perfect 3-for-3 outing from the field.
 
As a unit, Alcorn shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter.
 
However, in the third period, the homestanding Jaguars scored 12 points off nine (9) Alcorn turnovers. Additionally, it was Amani McWain getting into the scoring act with 10 points and two steals, aided by five points from Genovea Johnson. The duo combined to shoot 6-of-8 from the floor in the third quarter.
 
Southern outscored the Braves 22-10 in the period, snatching a 49-43 lead as the game ventured into the fourth quarter.
 
The Jaguars led by as much as 55-43 with 8:36 remaining the contest, before the Braves chipped into the lead and eventually knotted the game at 59-all with 1:14 remaining. Obillo, returning from an illness last week, supplied her side with 10 points in the fourth quarter, while the team's leading scorer Destiny Brown added five points.
 
Chloe Flemming and Johnson hit free throws down the stretch for the Jaguars, allowing them to secure the win.
 
Overall, Southern's speed scored 15 fast break points, while the Braves were held to just three in the contest in that category. Alcorn outscored the Jaguars 26-20 in the paint, but Brown was limited to just five points in what was one of her lowest-scoring efforts of the season for the Purple and Gold.
 
Southern was paced by Johnson with 19 points and three assists. McWain added 13 points and four steals.
 
Obillo finished as the leading scorer for the Braves with 16 points and six assists.
 
Alcorn returns to action Monday, Jan. 30, when the Braves travel to Grambling State at 5 p.m.
