VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Lady Braves softball team started the 2023 season with a point in the win column, defeating conference-foe Jackson State University in its first contest of the River City Classic. Alcorn (1-0) defeated the Lady Tigers 4-2 on Friday at the Sports Force Parks in Vicksburg, Miss.
Lady Brave newcomer Mikeria Howard led Alcorn at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance and two RBIs. Alexa Veamoi held down pitching duties, throwing for the entire game to allow two hits against and two earned runs with five strikeouts.
Jackson State was led by Isabel Gusman and Amaya Ruiz, who had one hit each. Macie Kuppenbender earned the loss in the circle. She pitched for 3.2 innings with six hits against, four earned runs, four walks, and one strikeout. Victoria Salazar closed out the contest, pitching for 3.1 innings.
Alcorn 4, JSU 2
Top 1st / Kennedy Terry led off for Alcorn, taking first base on a 3-2 walk. She then stole second base and advanced to third base on a ground out from Kristian Edwards. Kelsey Lockridge connected for a single, scoring Terry for the RBI. (ASU 1, JSU 0)
Lockridge moved to second base on a ground out from Marsha Hunt. She moved to second on a single from Howard and made it to third when a pitch hit Hannah Miller. With bases loaded, Saniah Dorsey was walked, and Lockridge scored. (ASU 2, JSU 0)
Bottom 1st / Jackson State tied the game at two in the bottom of the inning. Marissa Medina scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Madison Perry scored on a sacrifice fly. (ASU 2, JSU 2)
Top 3rd / Lockridge led off the top of the third, making it to base on a walk. Hunt reached first on a fielder's choice. Howard singled, scoring Hunt for her second RBI of the day. (ASU 3, JSU 2)
Top 4th / The Lady Braves scored their final run of the contest in the top of the fourth. Jillian Waters took the plate first, doubling to left field. Waters advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Sarah Kennedy. Terry then singled to score Waters. (ASU 4, JSU 2)
The Lady Braves return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they take on Southeastern Baptist College on day two of the River City Classic. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
