VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn Softball team cruises to a 2-0 record to open the 2023 season after defeating Southeastern Baptist College 12-1 on Saturday in day two of the River City Classic.
Four Lady Braves connected four two hits against the Chargers. Kennedy Terry led the offense with a 2-for-3 appearance with three runs and one RBI. Marsha Hunt connected twice with four at-bats to record two RBIs and two runs, and Ka'Miya Dillon went 2-for-3 with two runs. Aysia Pollard also had a 2-for-3 appearance with an RBI.
In the circle, Ashanti Carter (1-0) received her first pitching victory of the season. The sophomore from Lake Charles, La., pitched 4.0 innings for two hits against, one earned run and two strikeouts. A'Miya Stevens took in the mound in the fifth and final inning for one hit against.
Alcorn 12, SBC 1
Top 1st/ Terry led off for the Lady Braves with a single to center field. She then advanced to second on a single by Kristian Edwards. A walk by Kelsey Lockridge loaded the bases, and a fielder's choice allowed Terry to score. Lockridge eventually came home on a fielding error, and Hunt scored on a sacrifice fly. (ASU 3, SBC 0)
Top 2nd/ Dillon started off the second with a bunt, a stolen second base, and made it to third on a passed ball. She then came home on an error by the pitcher as Terry took first. Terry scored her second run of the day on a triple by Lockridge, and Lockridge came scored on the thrown ball. The final run of the inning came as Hunt singled to make it to base, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and went to third on a sacrifice fly. She scored the run on a single from Pollard, giving the Lady Braves a 7-0 advantage entering the bottom of the inning. (ASU 7, SBC 0)
Top 3rd/ Alcorn brought the score to 8-0 as Dillon scored on a throwing error after making it to base on a single through the right side (ASU 8, SBC 0)
Top 4th/ Genise Wells and Alonah Felton scored on a hit from Pollard. (ASU 10, SBC 0)
Bot 4th / The Chargers put two on base after a single and a walk. They eventually scored on a single for their only run of the game. (ASU 10, SBC 1)
Top 5th/ The Lady Braves scored two more runs before the game's conclusion. Terry singled to left field and advanced to second after a pitch hit Lockridge. Hunt single through the left side to score Terry, and Felton singled to left field to score Lockridge. (ASU 12, SBC 1)
The Lady Braves return to action on Sunday, Feb. 12, when they take on Tennessee State in the final game of the River City Classic. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
