Box Score 2 VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State Softball team splits the final day of the River City Classic to open up the 2023 season with a 3-1 record. The Lady Braves started with a 12-2 loss to Tennessee State but rebounded 12-7 against Alabama A&M in a makeup contest after yesterday's rainout.
The Lady Braves were unlucky in their first outing of the day against Tennessee State. Alcorn was plagued with fielding errors and struggled in the pitching circle. In the 12-2 loss, the Lady Braves tallied four hits with five errors.
Kennedy Terry connected for a triple, Marsha Hunt hit for a double, and Genise Wells and Hannah Miller had one single each. Miller and Kristian Edwards also contributed an RBI to the effort.
Four Lady Braves saw action in the circle during the contest against the Tigers. Alexa Veamoi (1-1) was credited with the loss, pitching for 3.2 innings for six hits against, seven runs (three earned), and two strikeouts.
TSU's offense was led by Onnika Spencer, who had a 3-for-4 outing, including two runs, three hits, and four RBI. Caitlyn Manus (2-0) received the pitching win, pitching the entire five-inning game for four hits against, two earned runs, and three strikeouts.
Alcorn did not let the earlier loss keep them down and rebounded against Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Alabama A&M. The Lady Braves defeated the Lady Bulldogs 12-7 in a rainout makeup game to improve 3-1 on the season.
Several players for Alcorn saw multiple hits in the action. Edwards connected for her first home run of the season with a single against Alabama A&M. She also recorded two runs and two RBIs. Kelsey Lockridge and Wells also had two RBI, and Terry and Hunt had two hits each.
Sophomore pitcher Ta'Niyah Fletcher entered the game in the fourth inning for a win in the circle. She pitched 4.0 innings for one hit against, one earned run, three walks, and four strikeouts.
The Lady Braves return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when they travel to the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
