LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State men's tennis team spent last week on the road, traveling to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Braves played three matches over three days but did not pick up a win during the journey.
Alcorn faced Lamar in a doubleheader on Friday, falling 4-0 in match one and 5-2 in match two. The Cardinals took the double point in the opening match with a clean sweep of the doubles competition. Lamar continued the momentum into the singles matches, taking points on courts one, six, and two.
During the encore match, the Cardinals once again took the doubles point. However, not before Braves duo Luka Andonov and Luka Rodic defeated Lamar's Gustav Hasslegren and Elias Peter on court two.
In the singles matchups, the Cardinals took four of six as Rodic and Andonov saw success again as a solo unit. Andonov defeated Hasslegren in three sets, winning the point, 3-6, 7-6, 10-2, on court three. Rodic grabbed the Braves' second point of the match, defeating Filippo Salsini, 6-2, 3-6, and 13-11, on court two.
Sunday, the Braves headed to Hattiesburg to face Southern Miss. Alcorn took its third weekend loss, dropping the match 7-0.
The Braves will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 17, when they travel to Jackson, Miss., to compete in the first SWAC Pod of the season. Alcorn will take on conference-foe Bethune-Cookman on Friday before facing Prairie View A&M on Sunday.
