HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Braves softball team got off to a great start against Southern Miss on Friday evening, starting the contest with a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, Alcorn could not stay on top of USM, falling 13-8 in its first contest of the Golden Eagles Invitational.
Kristian Edwards led the Lady Braves offense with a 2-for-4 appearance for one run and one RBI. Marsha Hunt led Alcorn in RBIs with two, and Kelsey Lockridge, Mikeria Howard, Hannah Miller, and Jillian Waters recorded one hit each.
In the circle, Ta'Niyah Fletcher entered the game in the third inning to record her first loss of the 2023 season. The Atlanta, Ga. native pitched 2.1 innings for five hits against, six runs (five earned), six walks, and three strikeouts.
Alexa Veamoi was the starting pitcher. She threw for 2.0 innings for three hits against, four earned runs, three walks, and one strikeout.
A'Mya Stevens was the closer for the contest. The Laurel, Miss. native pitched 1.2 innings for two hits against, three runs (two earned), one walk, and one strikeout.
Southern Miss remains undefeated with a 5-0 record. Hannah Borden led her team at the plate with a 2-for-4 appearance for three RBIs, and Maria Smith led the team in scoring with three runs.
Morgan Leinstock (3-0) entered the game in relief to earn the pitching win for the Golden Eagles. She pitched 3.1 innings for nine strikeouts.
Alcorn returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, for day two of the Golden Eagles Invitational. The Lady Braves take on the University of Tulsa at 9:30 a.m. and Jacksonville State at 6 p.m.
