LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State baseball team begins the 2023 season with an 0-2 start after dropping both games of a doubleheader against Alabama A&M on Saturday. The Braves fell 5-4 in game one and 9-5 in game two.
In the first contest, neither team scored for three innings until Alabama A&M broke the silence in the top of the fourth, scoring a run on a single. Alcorn answered at the bottom of the fifth as Jamal Green doubled to score Tyler Daniels to lock the scoreboard at 1.
The seventh inning brought two runs for both competitors. Bulldog Tommy Easley singled to bring Mekhi Lloyd and Chevalier Dorris home in the top. At the bottom, Diego Lopez-Molina singled to score Garrett Palladino, and Green connected again for a single to bring in Lopez-Molina, tying the score at 3.
The contest was decided in the eighth frame. AAMU left fielder Miles Jackson tripled to score parker and then came home on an error by the Braves shortstop. Alcorn attempted to rebound but only scored one as Dillon Crowell scored on a single from Palladino.
Kewan Braziel started game one for Alcorn by pitching 4.0 innings for four hits against, one earned run, two walks, and eight strikeouts. Green, a native of Scotlandville, La., went 2-for-3 at the plate for two RBIs.
Michael Lorenz took the loss on the mound. He entered the contest in the bottom of the seventh to pitch for 1.2 innings. He saw five hits against, two runs (one earned), two walks, and one strikeout.
The Braves struggled to make it home in the second contest. Alcorn out-hit Alabama A&M 9-8 but lost 9-5.
Green had a perfect showing at the plate. He went 3-for-3, including one double, for two runs and one RBI. Ben Martin went 1-for-3 and racked up two RBIs for the Braves.
Jermel Ford (0-1) recorded the pitching loss. Ford pitched 6.0 innings for five hits against, six runs (five earned), seven walks, and eight strikeouts.
Alcorn returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 19, facing Alabama A&M in the final game of the three-game series. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
