LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State men's basketball team defeated the Texas Southern Tigers, 89-81, on Monday evening inside Davey L. Whitney Complex. The Braves silenced a Tiger second-half comeback to secure the victory in its final home contest of the 2022-23 season. Alcorn remains tied for first with Grambling State in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, improving to 16-12 overall and 13-3 in the SWAC.
The Braves came out strong in the first period, garnering an 11-point lead over their opponent entering halftime. In the opening period, Alcorn shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 27.3 beyond the arc. After the break, the Braves increased their accuracy to 50 percent from the floor and 37.5 in the three-point range. They even saw improvement from the line moving from 68.18 percent to 77.78.
Despite landing more shots in the second half, Texas Southern was able to lock the scored board at 62 with 9:25 remaining in the game. Jeremiah Kendall put the Braves back on top with a layup in the paint, but it only started a scoring exchange that resulted in the contest's final tie at 70 with just over six minutes left to play.
Alcorn finished strong as Texas Southern continued to force the team to the line to remain the in the game. The Braves closed the making 8 of 10 free-throws, defeating the Tigers 89-81.
Three Alcorn players scored in the double-digits on Monday. Jeremiah Kendall tallied a season-high 33 points with six rebounds. Keondre Montgomery added 18 points, and Dekedran Thorn had 10.
On Texas Southern's side, PJ Henry had a career-high 41 points, and Joirdon Karl Nicholas added 14.
The Braves Basketball team will return to action on Thursday, March 3, traveling to Itta Bena, Miss., to face in-state rival Mississippi Valley State University. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
