LORMAN, Miss. – With her ninth double-double of the season, Destiny Brown paced the Alcorn State women's basketball team to a 72-66 victory over Texas Southern on Monday in its final home game of the 2022-23 season. The Lady Braves improved to 11-16 overall and 7-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Brown tallied 15 points, 11 boards, and two blocks to reach the double-double. Zy'Nyia White and Kiarra Henderson added 13 points each to the score, while Cayla Obilo had 12.
Micah Gray captured a game-high 26 points, four rebounds, and five assists to lead Texas Southern (2-25, 2-14 SWAC). Jaida Belton contributed nine points and seven boards, while Skye Green scored 9 points and four rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth game, with the lead changing 14 times and the score tied six times. The Lady Braves were more productive under in the paint, outscoring the Lady Tigers 28-17.
Both teams had double-digit turnovers: Alcorn had 14, and Texas Southern had 22. Despite having more turnovers than the Lady Braves, the Lady Tigers scored one more point on turnovers, 19-18.
The contest was decided with less than a minute left. With 59 seconds left on the clock, Gray for Texas Southern sank back-to-back free throws to lock the board at 66.
Obillo would follow Gray to the line on the other side of the court. She made both her baskets and stole the ball back before being fouled again. This time, she split the basket to give Alcorn a 69-66 advantage.
Henderson added two more points after Nakia Cheatham grabbed a Texas Southern Turnover. Then Obillo added the game's final point at the line to give the Lady Braves the 72-66 victory.
Alcorn will return to action on Thursday, traveling to Itta Bena, Miss., to take on Mississippi Valley State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
