LORMAN, Miss. – The Braves began the Jackson State series in a typical fashion contest with at 6 p.m. Friday contest at William "Bill" Foster Baseball Field at Wille E. "Rat" McGowan Stadium. Alcorn fell, 13-1, to the Tigers to fall to 1-8 on the season.
Despite the results, the Braves saw some wins in crucial areas. Jamaal Green pushed his batting average above .600, connecting for a double and a single on two at-bats. The designated hitter from Scotlandville, La., recorded Alcorn's only RBI of the night, improving his batting average to .611.
On the mound, Kewan Braziel was credited with his second loss of the season. The freshman pitcher threw for 3.0 innings for six hits against, eight runs (two earned), three walks, and three strikeouts.
Jackson State shortstop Ty Hill led his team's offense. He saw a 3-for-5 appearance for three RBIs and two runs, including on double and triple. Caleb Evans hit the only home run of the night during one of his five at-bats. He brought in just one run with an RBI.
Jesse Caver (3-2) pitched the entire contest for the Tigers. He delivered a career-high ten strikeouts while holding Alcor9n to four hits and an earned run. He facilitated just two walks.
Jackson State started scoring early with two runs in the first frame. Hill tripled to right center to score Jatavis Melton before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Jordon Smiley. The Braves answered in the bottom of the first when Green doubled to left center to bring Garrett Palladino home.
That would wrap up the scoring for the Braves, but JSU would add four runs in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth and sixth, then ended the contest early with three runs in the eighth for the 13-1 victory.
The Braves return to action on Saturday, March 4, when they take on Jackson State in the second game of the three-game series. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
