PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M completed the sweep of the Lady Braves softball team, taking the win in both contests of the Saturday doubleheader. Alcorn fell 5-3 in game one and 9-1 in the second to move to 7-23 on the season and 4-8 in the Southwest Athletic Conference.
GAME ONE
Alcorn equaled the Lady Panthers in hits, with each team connecting for five, but was crippled by errors, committing give while PV had one.
At the plate, Genise Wells led Alcorn with a 2-for-3 appearance with one run. Kelsey Lockridge had one hit with three at-bats for two RBIs and one run.
Lockridge also took the loss in the circle. The Vacherie, La. native threw the entire six innings and delivered six strikeouts with four walks, five hits against, and five runs (four earned).
The first two frames of the contest were uneventful, with PV scoring the first runs in the bottom of the third. The Lady Panthers scored three runs in the inning, one on an error by the second baseman, another on a ground out, and the last on an error by the shortstop to take a 3-0 lead.
Alcorn scored its first run in the top of the fourth. Kristian Edwards scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Miller. The Lady Braves went on to tie the game in the fourth. Lockridge connected for a home run for two RBIs to lock the scoreboard at three.
The game's fate was decided in the sixth inning. The Lady Panthers put up two runs on a double down the left field line for the 5-3 victory.
GAME TWO
Alcorn connected for seven hits but left five runners stranded in the 9-1 loss to PV game two. Kristian Edwards had a perfect 3-for-3 appearance, while Marsha Hunt hit a home run for the Lady Braves only point and RBI of the contest.
It took two pitchers to get Alcorn through the game. Ta'Niyah Fletcher took the loss in the circle, throwing for three innings with three strikeouts, two walks, four hits, and four runs (three earned). A'Mya Stevens entered the game in relief to pitch for 2.1 innings for one strikeout, two walks, five hits, and five earned runs.
Prairie View started strong, with its lead-off hitter Mia Nunez connecting for a home run to kick off the scoring effort. The Lady Panthers then added three runs in the second to gain a 4-0 lead over Alcorn.
Hunt hit her home run in the top of the fourth, but it would be the only run of the contest for the Lady Braves.
In the sixth, PV added five more runs, and the contest was cut short due to the run rule. The Lady Panthers claimed the 9-1 win and the series sweep.
The Lady Braves will be back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when they host Southeastern Baptist College. The game is set for 2 p.m.
