Softball Takes One, Drops One Versus Grambling

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball team split its doubleheader against Grambling State University Monday afternoon. The Lady Braves defeated the Lady Tigers 3-2 in the first contest but fell 9-1 in the doubleheader conclusion.

GAME ONE
Senior pitcher Alexa Veamoi was credited with the win in the circle, throwing the complete game and keeping Grambling through four of the seven innings. She walked two batters, had four hits against, and allowed two earned runs.

At the plate, Kristian Edwards led the Lady Braves offense. The Laurel, Miss., native had two hits on three at-bats for two runs. Four other players had hits for Alcorn. Hannah Miller, Marsha Hunt, Jamyiyah Cotton, and Kennedy Terry connected for a single hit, while Miller and Kelsey Lockridge were credited with one RBI.

The Lady Braves scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. After making it to base on a double through the left side, Edwards scored Alcorn's first run on a wild pitch.

In the third inning, the Lady Braves extended their lead to 2-0. Edwards scored yet again. This time on a single to center field off the bat of Miller.

Grambling ended their scoring drought in the fifth frame. One runner came in on a single, and a second scored on a ground out to tie the game at 2.

Alcorn regained the lead in the sixth and claimed the win as Ka'Miya Dillon scored on an error by the first baseman. The Lady Braves defeated Grambling 3-2.

GAME TWO
Alcorn could not carry game one's momentum into the second contest, dropping the game 9-1.

Miller hit a single up the middle in the first frame to score Edwards for the Lady Braves only run in the contest.

Grambling went on to score four runs in the second, one in the third, and three in the fifth to end the game in the fifth inning.

In game two, Edwards, Miller, Marsha Hunt, and Genise Wells had one hit each against GSU. Kiri Parker took the loss in the circle.  She threw for 4.0 innings to record two strikeouts, five hits against, and seven runs (four earned).

The Lady Braves will be back in action on Friday, April 14, when they travel to Houston to take on Texas Southern. The first game of the weekend series is set for 3 p.m.
