Softball Narrowly Misses Victory at Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas – The Lady Braves softball team narrowly missed taking the Texas Southern series, splitting the doubleheader against the Tigers to go 1-2 in the series. Alcorn shut out TSU in the first contest, winning 7-0, and dropped the last game 7-5. Marsha Hunt led the Lady Braves across the two contests with four hits and five RBIs.

GAME ONE
Hunt and Mikeria Howard had 2-for-4 appearances in game one to carry the Lady Braves' offense in the first game. Hunt collected two RBIs, while Howard had one run.

Kiri Parker recorded the win in the circle to improve to 4-9 on the season. She threw the entire 7-inning game for four hits against and two walks.

Alcorn recorded runs early, bringing in two in the opening frame. Hannah Miller connected for a center field to score Kristian Edwards, and Genise Wells hit to the shortstop to bring home Miller.

The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the fourth. The Lady Braves extended their lead to 3-0 when Parker, doing double duty, connected for a double to bring Howard home.

In the sixth, Alonah Felton singled to score Kelsey Lockridge, Mycah Hall singled to bring home Parker, and Hunt singled to left field to score Hall and Edwards.

The Lady Braves defeated Texas Southern 7-0.

GAME TWO
In game two, Hunt was again the offensive leader, connecting twice during four at-bats. She recorded three RBIs. Hall also had two hits on three-at base. She was responsible for bringing one runner home.

Parker took over pitching duties in the final frame of the contest to receive the loss in the circle. She faced six batters for three hits against and two earned runs.

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning, but Alcorn would take the lead in the top of the third. Lockridge hit a single-run homer to center field to give the Lady Braves a 4-3 advantage.

Texas Southern snuck past Alcorn in the fourth with two runs, but the Lady Braves forced another tie, 5-5, in the fifth. Hunt singled to left field, allowing Kennedy Terry to score.

In the sixth, the Lady Tigers would again take the lead to seal their victory, scoring two runs for the 7-5 victory.

Alcorn returns to action on Friday, April 21, hosting Southern University in the first of a three-game series. The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Alcorn State Softball Complex.
