Braves Sweep Southern on Senior Day

LORMAN, Miss. – The battle for the number four spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division heated up on Saturday, with fate falling favorably for the Lady Braves Softball team. Alcorn swept the doubleheader and took the series against Southern, 8-4, and 7-1, at the Alcorn State Softball Complex.

Saturday was a very eventful day for the Lady Braves. Not only did they take both contests, but Alcorn also honored seven seniors playing in their final home series wearing the Lady Braves uniform. Tcake Cole, Kelsey Lockridge, Kiri Parker, Marsha Hunt, Alexa Veamoi, Mycah Hall, and A'Mya Stevens were recognized for their contributions to the ASU softball program.

GAME ONE
The Lady Braves battle back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Lady Jaguars 8-4 in the opening contest of the three-game series. Alexa Veamoi was credited with the pitching victory, occupying the mound for the entire seven innings. She delivered one strikeout with 10 hits against, four earned runs, and two walks.

Mikeria Howard led ASU at the plate. The freshman right fielder connected for two hits on three at-bats for three RBIs and one run. Jamyiyah Cotton also had a 2-for-3 appearance. She recorded one RBI and one run.

Genise Wells scored the most runs for the Lady Braves. She tallied one hit on three at-bats for one RBI and two runs.

GAME TWO
The second game of the contest was unique because the pitchers of the opposing teams, Kiri Parker for Alcorn, and Chakirrious Parker for Southern, are sisters. Kiri bested her sister in the head-to-head, taking the win in the circle and leading the Lady Braves at the plate.

Kiri threw the entire contest, racking up three strikeouts with five hits and one unearned run. She had a perfect 3-for-3 appearance, scoring two runs and one RBI.

Alcorn and Southern return to the ASU Softball Complex on Sunday, April 23, at noon for the series' final game. The Lady Braves hope to complete the sweep and take the No. 4 spot in the West division uncontested.
