Hunts Home Run Earns Softball Victory

LORMAN, Miss. – Senior first baseman Marsha Hunt delivered a walk-off two-run homer to solidify the Alcorn State softball team's home sweep of Southern University on Sunday. The Lady Braves defeated the Lady Jaguars 7-5 to move to 12-26 overall and 9-11 in the conference play for the No. 4 spot in the SWAC West.

After opening the contest with back-to-back walks in the top of the first, Alcorn's defense quickly adjusted and made it out of the side unscathed.

The Lady Braves got to work at the plate, racking up five runs while Southern remained scoreless. In the second inning, Jamyiyah Cotton hit an in-the-park home run to put the first on the board.

In the third, Alcorn extended its lead to 4-0, scoring three. Kristian Edwards scored on a passed ball, Hunt scored Genise Wells with a single up the middle, and Mikeria Howard brought Hunt home on a double to left center.

A fifth run was scored in the fourth to give the Lady Braves a 5-0 advantage when Edwards doubled up the middle to bring in Jillian Walters.

In the fifth frame, Alcorn's pitching began to show some cracks. A walk and a wild pitch put a Southern runner on second base, and a second runner was put on first on another base on balls. Southern scored its first run of the game in the frame as Asia George came in on a single to right field.

The Lady Jaguars added three more runs in the sixth inning, connecting for three hits as Alcorn committed one error to put Southern within one of the Lady Braves lead, 5-4.

Southern scored the tying run in the top of the seventh, giving Alcorn just half of a frame to prevent extra innings.

With two outs and a 3-2 count, Hunt connected for a bomb to center field to give the Lady Braves the 7-5 victory.

Hunt led Alcorn's offense with a 2-for-3 appearance with two runs and three RBIs. Kiri Parker took the win in the circle, entering the contest in relief at the top of the seventh for one strikeout.

Alcorn returns to action on Wednesday, April 26, hosting Rust College at 2 p.m.
